I'm joined with Alex on the SMB ads go to market team as well as Chris from the marketing science team at OpenAI. And if you work in commerce, you probably felt this already, but customers are starting to make decisions in places that don't look like search and social paths that we've built around for years. So today, we're really gonna dive into how that's changing, how ads fit into ChatGPT, and how to tell whether a test is working for your business. And so here's what we're gonna be covering. Alex and I will start with the shopper journey and some early signals in our data. Alex is then gonna dive deep into what an ad is in ChatGPT, how the experience works. Chris will help us separate what we can observe from what we can prove, and then we're gonna dive deep into some practical questions together, how to start, what to measure, and when you'd know enough to keep investing. So you've probably heard this before. The new customer journey is a conversation, but let's put this into real terms. Say you need a new gym bag. You don't start with the brand. You start with your day, the commute, your laptop, your workout, your clothes, what you need in that bag, what you're willing to spend. A few questions later, you're comparing a backpack with a double bag, and then you're deciding if $80 is worth it to spend. That decision process isn't new. What's new is how much of it can happen in a single conversation. Because that gym bag example makes one thing clear. A lot happens before someone is ready to buy. They're working out what they need. They're comparing options, and they're testing whether a product fits their life. Alex, can you walk us through what we're looking at? Like, where is this activity happening, and how what should a brand take from it? Hey, guys. So I really wanna dive into this funnel and add a bit more context around those percentages. What's really important is where the commerce related activity is happening on chat g p t, and that's really around stage two or three. We'll talk a lot about how you insert yourself into the conversation as it's happening in real time across when people are researching, comparing, evaluating, and ultimately making decisions, which is happening all in one place in a really fast pace for the first time online. Yeah. And thanks, Alex. I mean, that's why I think this is really worth paying attention to. A brand has a chance to be useful while the customer is still performing a preference. So we're starting to see AI sources appear in those recorded paths to purchase too because data is proving us that customers discover the way that customers discover you is actively changing. So looking at triple well data, recorded links between AI sources and purchases are up over 210% in the last twelve months. And that doesn't mean AI caused every one of those purchases, but it does tell us that AI is showing up more often in the past we can see. So we we should really be paying attention to where customers are discovering brands, not just where they check out. Because the reason this feels different from a search box box is really the amount of context a person can bring. They can say what they're trying to do, what they've ruled out, what matters most. The conversation can move from help me to figure this out to which one should I should buy all in one place without starting over. That changes how a brand gets discovered. And what and and makes the next question pretty important. Which AI sources are already showing up in the orders we can trace? Alex, any context you wanna add here? Yeah. A 100%. And I think when we start to think about where we're showing up in the conversation and how we're showing up in the conversation, that context again is gonna be a key factor. In traditional search, we get one, two, maybe three words in terms of context. We're getting full paragraphs. I'm sure everyone in the chat has had a moment where they've gone back and forth, with chat GPT for maybe ten, twenty, an hour, sending different paragraphs exploring and just going in rabbit holes. And that behavior is, like, fundamentally new. And all of the context which comes with it is new areas for your brand to position itself around to. 100%, Alex. I know I've gone down some some rabbit holes myself this morning, and and definitely really, really, really important as we think about that change in consumer behavior. Absolutely. Because when we break down those AI attributed orders in Triple Whale, what's really astounding is ChatGPT is driving the bulk majority of this view, and that's how we're focused on it today. Brands are already seeing customers arrive from ChatGPT, and the question has objectively moved from could this matter to how do we show up well, how do we measure it without getting ahead of the evidence. And there's a scale piece that's really important here too. According to order OpenAI, we're seeing a billion weekly active users of ChatGPT. I mean, people are using ChatGPT for their everyday decisions. Think of your the the way that you search and ask questions now and how that's evolved even just over the last twelve months. And so as you think about this as a brand, if customers are already there, what does it look like for you to be present without getting the way in the way of conversation? So I'm gonna kick it back over to you, Alex, to show us the experience on ChatGPT ads and walk us through really what even are ChatGPT ads. Absolutely. Yeah. Billion users, lots of conversations, lots of context, and lots of rabbit holes, for sure, but mainly, lots of opportunities for your brands to show up, around those hyper contextualized environments. So I wanna introduce our ad card. So some of you may have seen it, some not. We're still in the process of rolling out in different markets. So I'm gonna, give you a rundown on those different markets. It's been a a crazy month, opening over 31 in the last, five weeks or so. But it basically shows up as an ad card with a one by one image, a headline, and copy introducing your brand, which is clearly broken out from the organic response from the engine. So those two are very distinct, and separate areas where we show ads. If we go to the next slide. And ads are matched matched to the context of the conversation. So this is a really important area as well. When we think about targeting conversations, how do we do that effectively? And, hopefully, I can give you a couple of hints, on how we're seeing customers do this in a really effective way already. But if we think about these conversations, it could be planning a trip to Yosemite with friends or exploring challenging trials across The US, researching a new car purchase. All of these pieces are gonna give us context on who that is from a personal relevant standpoint and additionally create the environments where we can seamlessly introduce our brands. And that's a really kind of key point as we move on to, targeting on, on GPT. So if we go to here, how do we use context to build conversational relevance? So traditional keyword search, as we said, we may get two words. Someone may look at running shoes. With us, they're looking for running shoes for summer training for wide feet. So much can be inferred from the context we get to give hyper specialized recommendations to, to customers. A really helpful formula when it comes to building context hints, which are fundamentally a new way to target, is think of the product category, then think of the use case or context, and then the qualifier. So again, instead of beach footwear, it might be comfortable sand sandals for beach vacation, which are under $50. And, again, this is gonna help you to build context hints around distinct intent areas. And these intent pockets are gonna help you to hit, customers at that two or the three in the chart we showed earlier, where they're starting to evaluate, compare, and consider different products, and then ultimately make decisions on what they're gonna purchase or where they're gonna go. In terms of context hints, a good framework is five to seven words. There should be about 30 per ad group, and ad group should be around distinct intent areas as I said. If we go to the next slide, we can touch on what that looks like. So I always say they should be around personas or even problem statements. What are the clear problem statements that you're trying to solve? Then what are all of these context hints and passages of conversation that would align seamlessly with those problem statements? How might you discuss them? What would that look like if you were going back and forth trying to solve them? And that's really gonna help you to build robust intent pockets which you can tap into. The next thing is building your ads. So your ads should seamlessly pose your product, as a solution to that problem, and it creates a nice seamless journey which is really where we start to see incredible performance across the platform. So I'd really advise everyone to start with that persona or that problem statement which your business or product is solving, and then build out from there to develop context tints, intent areas, and then ultimately your ad structure as well. And why ads in chat GPT? So we fundamentally believe that ads should be that AI should be accessible to the world, and ads is a a huge part of us completing that journey. Four key themes, which are always gonna be the case with our ads. We have answer independence. So the answers are independent of the engine results. They're clearly broken out. We have conversational privacy. So user conversations are never gonna be revealed to any brands or anyone outside of that, that initial user. We have choices and controls. Users can take two clicks, and they can break out what ads they wanna see, why they're seeing them, report ads, or say they don't like them. And then lastly is long term value. We think with the hyper contact contextualized ads we show, we can provide real long term value for users by helping them to find solutions and the right products. Brand safety is a key feature of our platform as well. Your brand is gonna show up in the right environments and user safe environments too. We're not gonna target any sensitive conversations, and we have clear user controls around that. And so why is this the advantage now? So we've hit a billion users in terms of weekly active users, which is a ton of people, as we covered earlier. Over a 100,000 customers have flooded into the platform, and so we're really rapidly building out best practices and best ways to scale and find performance across the platform too. And as I said, we opened 31 markets over five weeks. We're at 52 countries with plenty more to come. So I saw a ton of different countries in the chat. Hopefully, we'll be open everywhere, ASAP. And right now, you have the early mover advantage. So like SEO in 2008 to 2010, and then and then social platforms close after that, this is a new frontier, for advertising. And it really is that middle part between discovery and then purchase intent and all of that incredible stuff that happened between it. So now is a perfect time to be stepping in, and jumping in to present your brand around these hyper contextualized areas. I will pass it over to Chris to talk about how we should measure. Thanks, Alex. Actually, I'm gonna quickly cover some of the triple oil data that's supporting a lot of the claims you are making around that growth, because we're seeing with TripleWell customers, ChatTBT ads is continuing to climb in spend as more brands begin to test. So in the TripleWell brands we're tracking, we're seeing ChatTBT ends, ad spend grew 640% just between July 14 and September 2, and the number of customers with that spend grew 408%. Of course, as as Alex mentioned, the this is still early, and the base of our customers is still developing and adopting chat gbt ads. But brands are objectively moving from curiosity to actual testing, and so that tells us adoption is effectively happening. And it's not just adoption. We can see engagement too. ChatGPT Ads has a 1.34 aggregate click through rate in the sample, of users, and, that sits alongside of 1.24 for Microsoft Ads, 1.14 for TikTok and Pinterest. And while these aren't apples to apples channels, what I take from here is that people are willing to engage with the format, which, of course, leads to the harder question, did that engagement create value for the brand, or did it simply give us another promising looking platform metric? So how do you pivot from interesting new channel to a business decision? Every platform can show you its spend, its clicks, and attributed conversation conversions. A brand has to really decide whether this deserves the next dollar alongside everything else the brand is doing. I mean, Chris, how should we think about measuring a channel where so much of the decision may happen before someone clicks? Yeah. Let's let's dive in. If you if you wanna move to the next slide. So I think Alex did a really good job of kind of laying out what makes ChatGPT so unique. I think our ownership of the consideration layer really positions, you know, ads for success within our platform. When you think about that consideration layer, you know, typically, that was fragmented across search and social and retailer sites and all kinds of other sources. ChatGPT really brings together that entire process and into one place. And as a result, we have a lot of context around our users and that's something that advertisers can really use to to drive their business success. We understand more of those customer needs, more of those constraints and some of those trade offs as as consumer decision making is taking shape. Because CHAP GBCT sits in this unique space within the customer journey, if you're just focusing on one end of the spectrum when it comes to measurement, whether that's clicks or at the other end of the funnel, you're really losing out on that context and the true impact of the of your investment. Our ads have an opportunity to influence across the buying cycle, not just at one point within it. And some people may just not be ready to take an immediate click through action or or an immediate action based on an ad. The industry is finally moving to a place where we can better account for the full impact of ads, not just that last thing that somebody saw before they made a purchase or signed up for a service. And we think chat g p t is really advantage to take, advantage of this, new phase in measurement. A really good illustration of some of the shortcomings of a click only or single source approach to measurement is shown directly in ChatGPT's own data. More than half of our view through conversions on ChatGPT happen within that first hour. This suggested ads are having a causal impact. The conversion isn't just happening as a result of a click or within that same session. Think about it this way. We've we've used a lot of examples in gym bags and shoes. So I'll stick with this shoe analogy. But, you're in the market for a new pair of running shoes, you see an ad for a brand that you're interested in, but you just don't have time to make a purchase in that moment. When you get home and you're in front of your laptop, you head to the retailer site and buy that new pair of shoes. That ad obviously had a huge impact on your buying decision, but if you don't have the right tool kit in place, you're probably going to miss out on it. You didn't click through the ad, so how do how does the retailer actually know that you made that purchase if they're really looking at it in a pretty pretty narrow, way? When a new channel comes along, I think everybody, you know, wants to understand how it's working. So our our philosophy at ChattGPT is really modern measurement needs a a multi pronged approach. If you're just focusing on one area of of kind of the the the main ways that you can look at ads, you're you're losing out of the opportunity to really answer the right questions. So if you think about kind of the the things that we have laid out here, attribution is really about making sure that you understand what in platform tactics are working and you have a a really good sense of sort of how your activation is is working in the day to day. Incrementality answers that causal question, what's changing because of advertising? And then M and M kind of looks holistically at all of your channels and allows you to do investment scenarios and and things that will optimize the entire system versus a single platform. It's really about kind of taking these tools together and not just on their own and using it to prove and improve performance. And that's why we're really bullish on our relationship with Triple Oil and some of the things that they're building. So I'll kick it back to you, Anthony, to to run through that. Awesome. Thanks, Chris. Yeah. And before we dive so far in, into Triple Whale and kind of how you can achieve that multi pronged approach, it's important to just remember, like, Chat JBt Ads isn't arriving in a vacuum. You've already have other channels up and running, so whether that's Meta, Google, TikTok, likely you're running an email program, and you're accountable for each. So each platform is, of course, can make its own case, in the same order may receive different credit and different reports. Really, our job at Triple Whale is to put the new channel and chat GPT ads in the context of your entire business, spend, revenue, new customers, your profit. So then you can decide which evidence is useful for optimizing a campaign and which evidence really you need before you move budget. And so that really is the ethos of Triple Whale. So if you haven't heard of Triple Whale, we're the AI operating system for modern commerce, which is really just a fancy way of saying that we take all of your data, so where you sell, where you market, that includes chat gbt ads. We centralize it. We normalize it so it's all in one place, and then we run it against those measurement models Chris walked through. So attribution, incrementality, ultimately, so that you can trust the data that you're looking at. Then we layer our AI harness, Mobi, on top of it all. Mobi takes all of the frontier models, those from OpenAI, but also those from Anthropic, from DeepMind, and so many more so that Mobi can tell you what to do to drive the most growth for your business. And then Mobi goes even as far as taking the action for you within your guardrails and aligned to your business context. So here you can really see that further, where our orders and your customer data sit alongside of your marketing data. Measurement layer really helps you understand how every channel is contributing. We have an enrichment layer that we're gonna talk through that can send selected and useful conversion signals back to platforms like ChatGPT ads. And then we have a context layer, which helps Mobi work from your definitions and your business goals rather than just a generic prompt. So I'm not gonna walk through every single layer. For this conversation, we're really gonna focus on two layers, measurement so that you can measure the new channel consistently, and then the enrichment so that you can give chat gbt ads a better signal to optimize towards. So measurement really is the first job. When you launch, it's important that you put ChatGPT ad ads besides the channels that you already use so that you can look at spend, you can look at attributed conversions through a consistent lens, and pay attention to new customer outcomes, not just a platform's conversion count. So this table is an example of that view within Triple Whale where attribution really helps you manage the day to day, as Chris mentioned. So as history builds and testing is feasible, you can ask the broader contribution question that Chris laid out. And the second job really is that feedback loop via enrichment. So if you learn that one kind of conversion matters more to your business than another, you want the platform to receive that useful signal. So we have a tool called Sonar Optimize, which really sends selected first party signals through our conversions API with Chat GPT ads to a selected pixel. Really simple mechanism, which ultimately gives chat GPT ads more context about the conversion. So that includes more events, more signals so that the platform itself can better target and optimize to increase that conversion performance. It truly is that feedback loop that ultimately leads to increased performance. And so if you're thinking about testing, don't make the first campaign every question at once. Pick the business outcome. Make sure spend and conversion show up alongside the rest of your media, and agree in advance what you would make what would make you continue, what would make you change course, or stop altogether. Really simple, and and we're gonna kinda dive a little bit deeper into talk about how to get started and how, ChatGPT ads can can work for your business. Alright, guys. So it's time for an open discussion. So, Alex, for a brand that wants to test ChatGPT ads today, what's the lowest lift way they can get started? Yeah. Absolutely. So, we actually, excitingly, have an alias live. We're gonna flash it up at some point, which is get ads live at open ai.com. And if you reach out there, we can work with an onboarding specialist who will help you to get set up, and get your ads rolled out. But there's tons we can learn from the advertising you've done on other platforms as well. So we have, four best practices and a scaling guide to help take assets from other platforms which have driven success for you, and to turn those into a chat GPT strategy. So if you reach out to that email, we can hook you up with one of the team who will help you to get those strategies deployed and get you set up. I think, a couple of, things that spring to mind is always making sure your measurements in a good spot as Anthony touched on, making sure you develop those intent areas effectively, and then also building kind of seamless conversation based advertising as well, by making sure you're tying in those ads to the actual problem statements and personas. We also have our agentic plug in. So you can actually directly integrate our ads platform into, your, ChatGPT account, to use it to run analysis or make any changes or creative changes you wanted to make as well or to find those intent areas by looking at what's worked in your ad so far too. Love that. Lots of low lift ways to get started and and up and running quickly and good ways for analysis. And, Alex, to that point too, what are you seeing from brands on ChatGPT ads advertising that has has surprised you so far? Yeah. A 100%. I think, what's been really interesting for me is the correlation with performance and positioning. So I kind of touched on this a bit earlier, but where speed on social platforms is absolutely vital, to really drive impact, and where having kind of very direct language on the traditional search side, has been incredibly, impactful there. We just need this different tact, and it's about going upstream and slotting into these comparison and evaluation stages, which is where we've really seen kind of the the core of performance come from. So that's been like a massive learning, for me, especially over the last few months as we've, we've ramped customers. I think additionally, is really mapping out the journey, which, you touched on earlier. But thinking about those different stages and what are the problem statements or personas that would be tapped into those different stages of the acquisition funnel as well. And that's been, like, a fundamental shift from anything I've seen in my, my time in advertising in the past. So true. No. The amount of influence you can have across the entire decision funnel is is really, really, really interesting and unique. And and, Chris, once a brand is live, how should they think about whether the channel is working and whether it's ready to scale? Yeah. Yeah. I I love that question. So I think the one of the things that's that's maybe a little bit underrated is is really having a clear KPI and target when you're activating on your platform. If you really have a good sense of what success looks like, it it makes it easier to optimize towards that North Star. From there, we we touched on this a little bit in the measurement section, but, you have to have kind of multiple toolkits to to be able to inform, you know, the different questions that that happen along the way. Attribution is is going to be really aligned to delivery and and tactical optimization. Incrementality will tell you causally if you're driving impact, but you really need M and M or a solution that allows you to evaluate the marginal impact of a platform to decide when it's time to actually put more investment in and really scale up and how much scale a platform can take. So I think having kind of those different tools in your toolbox really allows you to make informed decisions. And, you know, I think you have to be a little bit patient, especially when you're working with new platform. You're not going to get necessarily the same performance right out of the box that you're going to get with the platform you've been working with for ten years. You need to have kind of a test and learn mindset and and have the patience to to to really put in the rigor to put the right plan in place and and grow with the business. Love that. Makes a ton of sense. And and, yeah, it is really about that testing plan and ensuring that everyone in your business is aligned on that and so that you can make those decisions collectively confidently. And I think on the inverse side, as you think about signals that matter most, like, what are those early signals that matter most in Chat GPT ads? Like, what conversion data helps the platform learn and optimize? Yeah. I think this is, one of the really positive ways that that the industry has developed and and one of the things that we've we've thought about as we built out the chat g p t ads. So it used to be that, you know, the platform kinda dictated the signal that an advertiser could use when it comes came to optimization, whether it was clicks or views or or engagement data or more traditional copy and pixel metrics. While all that stuff, you know, we we provide those different optimization opt options. One of the things that, you know, we're thinking about is how do we let our advertisers really optimize towards their source of truth? That's in part why why we built up the partnership with Triple Whale. Allowing people to use sonar and ingest that data that's really aligned to their source of truth measurement is a big step up and and makes things easier for our advertisers. So the answer really depends on your business model and the things that you're trying to achieve as an advertiser. But for us as a platform, we're trying to kinda democratize that optimization and let you get to the heart of your business metrics. Makes a ton of sense and and love to see that that evolution. And a a question really for you both as we we firm out the the discussion is, you've worked in advertising for a while. What makes ChatGPT ads different? Whether that's methodology, implementation, or maybe, Alex, you start. Yeah. Absolutely. So I think it's the fundamental shift of targeting users on other platforms to targeting conversations. So where are you gonna get that distribution and really analyzing the context which you're slotting into, as I've said, is is the key. And it's such a fundamental shift away from, advertising on other platforms where it is very audience based. And I think that combination of personalization from existing context, connected with specific conversations is is just hyper unique, and, definitely takes an adjustment, as Chris says, as you get kind of testing across the platform, to change that mindset, because it's definitely, not typical of, of the platforms which are out there right now. Yeah. I I I think Alex really kinda nailed it with just the the context that we have of about, you know, the the users of our platform and and giving that ability to really leverage that as an advertiser is is going to open up some unparalleled opportunities. I think also, you know, just the speed with with which we're able to to continue to build out the platform is really gonna be a differentiator for us. You know, we're we're still relatively new, but if you look at the things that we've rolled out, you know, since we've launched ads, it's a it's a pretty impressive list. And the expectation is it's only gonna get better from here. So I think those two things are what really sets us apart. That awesome. That's I'd love to hear that. And we have a few questions in the q and a that I think might be very quick to answer. There's one from Jesse, and maybe this is for either of you, Alex or Chris. But how often should you refresh creative? Is it not similar to meta ads in that sense? Alex, do you wanna take that order? I can I can say kinda high level? So in terms of best practices, as well, when we're thinking about these distinct areas, I recommend folks when they initially test, to test with 10 different ad groups. So versus consolidation, a big learning for me has been massive expansion, in terms of the different ad groups and context areas that you're stepping into. Within that as well, we'd recommend testing around 10 ads. So it is a significant load. We're talking around a a 100 ads is really a launch best practice, which I give to to customers, as do my team. You're probably thinking that sounds like a lot, but there is a lot we can do to, help in terms of agents and our scaling guides to help build out intent areas, and different context ins, different headlines, and different ad copies, which allow you to scale creative a lot more effectively. What I generally advise as well is as we gather signal, and we go through kind of a a traditional learning phase with every platform, we would recommend, like, not touching ads for the first couple of weeks, is a a baseline. Interested to hear Chris Chris's point of view on this as well. But, we'd recommend not touching ads for a couple of weeks, and then go through a pruning exercise of removing creatives and intent areas that didn't resonate with audiences, and then start to rotate new ones in. But I'm seeing the sweet spot is really around kind of 10 personas, problem statements at that ad group level, which you're trying to solve with the different ad creatives. We'd love to get Chris's, POV as well. Yeah. That's why I kicked it to you. You you did a better job of answering that. But I would have I think from a from a measurement perspective, a lot of that that is definitely true. One of the things that we're gonna continue to to iterate on is just giving advertisers more control over testing so that as you're spinning up new new ad groups and new creatives, you really get that rich data back and we're able to to give you that direct feedback loop of of what's working and what's not so that the next ad that you launch is is more effective than the last. Love it, guys. Super tactical. Super helpful. We have a few more questions, and we've got some time for more. Are there any plans to loosen the requirements of shopping campaigns, so brands with smaller SKU counts can advertise? Not sure in terms of the policy block around low SKUs. Not sure if there's more information that can be shared on that or, Chris, if you have any insight on that one. Yeah. I think we're we're maybe missing a little context on that question. So I'm not I'm not a 100% sure, what the specific. blocker is. No worries. I know there's a there's a few questions here just around point of contact, and so I think that's a perfect segue into kinda how we can, really what next steps are, how brands can get started, how they can get moving on Chat GPT ads, have their direct point of contact. As Alex mentioned, we have a direct email that the that chat that OpenAI has has given us, get ads live at open a I dot com. This is a dedicated address, so you can ask about access in supported markets and what you need to have ready for your first campaign. So definitely step one if you wanna begin testing ChatGPT ads. Step two is absolutely making sure that you can tell whether it's working. And so you wanna be ensuring that you're measuring this alongside of the rest of your media mix, and so you'll need a tool like Tripo Oil. So Tripo Oil is super simple. You can go to tripleoil.com slash book a demo, talk to our team, see your demo in Triple Oil. We'll get you started with the free account, can discuss the options for multi touch attribution using Mobi to automate some of that, attribution and measurement analysis, so that you can learn from what you're testing and know what to do next. So two really actionable, really easy steps to get started with ChatGPT ads and measuring the effectiveness of those. But, Alex, Chris, thank you so much for joining us.
